Well finally India won an individual Olympic gold in Beijing.A rare achievement in a nation starving and craving for winners.
The Govt of Maharashtra even gifted 10 lakhs to Abhinav for his gold medal.It makes no sense as his father gifted him a 200 crore hotel!!!!!
A mockery of the gift.Does he even need it?AND WHAT HAS THE INDIAN GOVT DONE FOR SPORT(NOT CRICKET,EVEN THOUGH I AM A DIE HARD FAN).
Our country does not even have a decent infrastructure for sports,and maybe that is the main reason why most of the families do not encourage their children to take up sports as a profession,unless its IPL(not cricket).Even PT USHA ,ANJU BOBBY GEORGE really
had to struggle to reach the top if it had not been for the somewhat decent sport
facilities in kerala, and their individual sponsors.
The medal won by Abhinav was due to the intense training he underwent in Europe for
4 years to win that gold.it was only due to his background that is, He comes from a very affluent family,he could pursue his passion in a nation where sport is just a means of entertainment and not a source of livelihood.
The Govt rewards him as if they were part of this victory.
Even in India athletes train only 2 years prior to the games,whereas in nations like
US and the UK young sporting talent is tapped and groomed from a very tender age.
The govt's of the west have out of the world training facilities which India may never match up with.
Our nation has to start giving importance and provide decent infrastructure to get the best and to encourage young sporting talents in India(which are many)to take up
sports for a lifetime,else we will have to wait for ETERNITY to see another medal at the games.
